Developing scissor skills in school
Scissor skills are useful for school life, but as adults they are not that vital.. how often do we cut out anything complicated.. often we may only cut the top off a packet of food, or some wrapping paper.
But if children can’t use scissors or have difficulties with complex shapes they will need adjustment during school activities. Also, if a child is having difficulty with using scissors they might also have difficulties with daily activities that need coordination and two hands working together, such as using cutlery, doing buttons and laces,
Ages and Stages
Development of scissor skills – remember this is a rough guide – all children are different!
1.5-2 years: begin learning how to open and close scissors, usually using both hands -use small plastic scissors made for toddlers
2 years: snips with scissors
2.5 years: cuts across a piece of paper
3 -3.5 years old: child can follow a line to cut across paper. Holds and starts to turn the paper with the other hand
Safety
Keep fingers away from the blades while cutting.
Stay focused and keep their eyes on the blades
Cut away from themselves and others, never towards themselves or anyone else.
Always use scissors while not moving, like standing still or sitting down.
